What's a civil war and which army controlled the main cities in the civil war?

A civil war is a war within a country, usually pitting parts of the country with strong beliefs against each other. This was evident in the american civil war, where the south believed in slavery, and the north did not. As for the second part of the question, it's usually the government controlling main cities, but since it varies, I'm not completely sure.
