Why is the Battle at Agincourt during the Hundred Years' War significant in military history? The English abandoned traditional weaponry and defeated the French using longbows. The battle was the first battle to be fought entirely on the sea. Philip VI of France and Edward III of England used mercenaries to fight the battle. Using the cover of darkness, the French defeated the English in a nighttime raid.
