The eastern branch then split up, with some of the people moving deeper into the interior of the continent, while some continued southward along the Indian Ocean coastline. The numbers of migrants were so high, and they were so successful in overtaking territories, that the Bantu quickly became the largest group of people in sub-Saharan Africa by far.
