How do you define imperialism? What are the benefits? Why were some people against it?

On the whole, I’m going with no. The colonized were generally made second class citizens in their own countries. In some places (for example, the Congo, parts of the Americas), people were literally enslaved. Artificial lines imposed on the map by rival colonialist governments created new conflicts on the ground where none existed before, leading to decades or centuries of serious problems (Hutus and Tutsis weren’t always mortal enemies, and the less said about Sykes-Picot the better), layered on top of whatever local conflicts already existed. And in the New World, vast numbers of people died from diseases brought in by colonists
