Genes influence an organism's traits by coding for proteins.

The DNA of an organism is the place where the information that has to do with the making of proteins is kept.

When the transcription process starts, this information is then taken to another area that is referred to as the RNA in the nucleus of the organism.

During protein synthesis, the organism produces proteins in the cell. Proteins are responsible for carrying out much of the functions inside the cells which is where they determine these traits.
