After the racial turmoil of the 1960s, most Southern Caucasians and many Catholics from the North turned to the Republican Party in the presidential election. Throughout the 1990s, white evangelicals and southerners became inclined toward the conservative Republican Party at the state and local levels at the expense of the increasingly liberal Democratic Party.
