The Chesapeake Colonies were the grower of one cash crop tobacco which became part of their economy. The growing of the tobacco led in the rise of the white indentured servants in Chesapeake Colonies. Life was very harsh and struggle in the colonies, so servants were required to lessen the burden. Indentured servants were part of the contract system, which required them to work for years. After the end of the contract, they became free and received land to be a farmer.

Slaves in the Caribbean had no rights as they seen as the property of their masters. They were bought and sold as a commodity by planters. They were labours forced to work in plantations to grow crops including sugarcane etc. They were brought from Africa in cargo ships and sold in the Caribbean.
