Option A: Comparing the Two Speeches
• Write a three to five paragraph essay comparing a speech by Malcolm X to a speech by
Martin Luther King, Jr.
The first paragraph should introduce and summarize the basics of both speeches. Explain
where and when it was given, and who was in the audience.
The heart of the essay should describe and compare the two speaking styles of these
men. How does each speaker address the audience? As a friend? As a preacher? As a
demanding teacher or instructor?
• What kind of language is being used? Formal or informal?
Which speech was more effective in gaining what the speaker wanted?
