That day marked the end of the second World War. A memorial was erected on this day, and it is now known as V day, or several other variations of that. The Nazis surrendered unconditionally, and thus the war ended.

Upon the official surrender was announced, celebrations erupted around the world. British celebrated the victory in the streets of London, Trafalgar Square and up the Mall to Buckingham Palace.
