Ces lois sur le mariage et la propriété, ou «clandestinité», stipulaient qu'une femme mariée n'avait pas d'existence juridique distincte de son mari. Une femme mariée ou une femme secrète était une personne à charge, comme un enfant mineur ou une esclave, et ne pouvait pas posséder de propriété en son nom ou contrôler ses propres revenus, sauf dans des circonstances très spécifiques. Lorsqu'un mari décède, sa femme ne peut pas être la tutrice de leurs enfants mineurs.
