Alexander Hamilton was born in the British West Indies in 1755. His father abandoned the family when he was ten, and his mother died three years later. By age 11, he was working as a clerk and bookkeeper. Alexander so impressed his superiors that they sent him to King's College in New York. While studying in New York, the Revolutionary War broke out. Hamilton distinguished himself as a soldier and was asked by General George Washington to become his aide. After the war, Hamilton earned his law degree and became are presentative in the Continental Congress. He later became the country's first Secretary of the Treasury.
