Jacobs name was changed because he wrestled with God and prevailed. The name Israel means  Prince with God.

The wives of Jacob who bore him children were Rachael who bore Joseph and Benjamin. Her maid, Bilhah who bore Dan and Naphthali. Zilpah, maid of Jacobs wife, Leah, bore; Gad and Asher. Leah bore; Issachar, Zebulun, Dinah, Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah.

Joseph and Benjamin were special to Jacob because they were both born by his beloved wife Rachael.  Rachael stole Labans gods when Jacob fled from Laban and pretended that was menstruating when Laban caught up with Jacob and Jacob asked him to search his entire company for any of his  properties. Rachael died in child birth near at Bethlehem and was buried there.

The garment that Jacob made for Joseph was called the coat of many colors.

Josephs brothers were angry with him because their father loves him so much and secondly because of Josephs dreams which implied that his brothers were to serve him in the future.

The brothers of Joseph originally intended to throw him into a pit and let him die but they rather sold him to the Ishmaelite.

The expression   "God writes straight with crooked lines." portrays the Christian belief that God is perfect and people are not. However, God can still achieve His perfect plan through the imperfect actions of people. This is clearly seen in the outcome of Joseph while in prison after he was accused of falsely by Portiphers wife.

The ordeal of Joseph still happens today. I was falsely accused of theft but God vindicated and promoted me through that ordeal.

Josephs understanding of Gods hand in his life enabled him to forgive his brothers and provide for them and their families in Egypt throughout the famine that rocked the whole world for seven years.
