Great Britain and Japan are both island nations with limited resources. As a result, each nation developed according to its distinctive geographic location and limitations.

For this assignment, compare and contrast the effects of geography on the industrialization and imperialistic growth of these two nations. Use evidence from at least five documents in your essay. Support your response with relevant facts, examples, and details.

Japan and the United Kingdom (UK) have had a tumultuous relationship in the past as little islands compete on the world scene.

In the seventeenth (17th) century, Great Britain, as a European nation, followed the lead of other European powers such as Spain and Portugal and began to establish colonies.

Great Britain as an European Nation, followed the lead of other European Powers like Spain and Portugal, and began to found colonies in the seventeenth century. These colonies would become part of the British Empire, the largest empire in history.

Britain was also the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, more specifically northern England, in cities such as Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield.

Finally, as an Island nation, Britain understood that its best defence was a strong navy, and it developed one over the years, which made the island essentially impossible to invade.

Japan on the other hand, was an Asian nation that was not interested in foreign matters. In fact, Japan had closed itself to the world until general Mathew Perry obliged the Japanese to trade with the United States.

From then on, Japan decided to embrace European and American values, and ended the Feudal regime that had controlled the island for centuries. It also began to industrialize, and to seek out colonies in the Pacific and in Asia.

1. yes it was the new deal introduced lots of regulations to workers, such as the national labour relations act of 1935 which workers to form unions and protected the members from other laws as well as forcing businesses to listen to the unions and their workers

2.the new deal had a lot of great ideas. but when fdr created the national industrial recovery act. they set prizes and work hours for the workers. the workers made more money ($.40 rather than $.20) but because they did not work as much they would end up making less money. after a while the supreme court found this act to be un-constitutional. but sense the people weren’t   making as much money they could not afford the products. even though the new deal was taken away in 1939 because the government became to powerful, there are still remnants of it in our government. national labor relations, social security, etc… the new deal alone did not end the depression but it the u.s.a dramatically and set them on the right track to recover and become the powerhouse of a country it is today.

3. yes it did bring some relief to those who were willing and able to work and it assisted in terms of creating new and strengthening existing infrastructure.
