How widespread was slave ownership?

Owning slaves was not as common as initially thought among the United States. Total slave ownership among the southern states was somewhere among 33% of the total population. Just think, slaves were expensive. Only the wealthiest land owners had more than a couple of slaves, which is supported by how some men made a living just off of returning runaway slaves.
