Buddhism is based on humanism. It teaches that the human mind is capable of attaining the highest level of compassion and wisdom, the state of Enlightenment, which can transform hardships and sufferings and creates happiness and harmony in a most valuable life.

This potential for enlightenment is part of the human make-up, and requires efforts for self-mastery to make it a reality. In this basic perspective, Buddhism teaches taking full responsibility for one’s life, because the power of enlightened mind is fully capable of leading one’s life to best state in all situations. There is no victim spirit in Buddhism, but taking responsibility.

As Nichiren called it: “Buddhism is reason” , as it teaches that all phenomena in life are based on an eternal Law of Cause and Effect. There are no imposed limitations in Buddhism on how you ‘have to’ use or enjoy your life, it is wisdom and awareness of causes and effects that is fit to make a situation the best possible.

To suggest that each person - since birth - has the potential for enjoying a life of highest humanity and enlightenment - this offers reasons for not to feel inferior, and maintain self-esteem as a capable human being.
