By: Lucy Mizell

Jonas Salk's Beginning
Thank you, Geni. com, Britannica. com, and History. com for records on how he did in school and if he liked school!

Jonas Salk was often being told to work harder in his studies, or that there more important than whatever he was doing. Jonas Salk was a very smart child, but didn't always want to be studying. As he grew up, the smarter he was getting, and the more he decided that learning would help in.

Jonas Salk's Discovery
Thank you, Mcall. com and nautil. us for relationships, dates, and names!

In 1939, Jonas receive a D. M. at New York University School of Medicine, also being the first person in his family to ever got to college! After His D. M. he started to look for a lab partner, and he found a man named Thomas Francis Jr. At the time, Thomas was leading a study on killed-virus immunity. On Friday, June 9th, 1939, Jonas Salk gets married to his first wife Donna Salk. Sometime after they got married, they have three sons, Peter (the oldest), Darrell (the second child and the middle child), and then Jonathan (the youngest). In 1942, Jonas Salk decided that is was a good idea, and that he should work even more with Thomas, by joining him at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. That same year of 1942, he decides he wants to join another group to help with finding a vaccine for influenza. Five years later, in 1947 Jonas decided to be the associate professor of Bacteriology. That same year, Jonas became the head of the Virus Research Laboratory, located at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. At Pittsburgh University Jonas started to study Polio. Sometime in the mid-20th century, hundreds to thousands of people (all ages) were hit with Polio a year. Jonas and several other scientists he knew from other universities formed this group to further understand the different symptoms of the Polio virus. Jonas along with the other groups he was in, studied other studies in understanding the three different symptoms of the Polio virus. Jonas later explained that three viruses that were "dead" can cause an antibody in monkey. With this discovery, he assumed that the same would be true for humans. In 1952, Jonas decides to test his vaccine made from "killed" viruses. He started by testing it on children who had recovered from Polio, and then he tested it on people who had never had Polio. Then he tested it on himself, his kids, and his wife. He succeeded on creating an antibody for the people he tested. His progress was recorded later that year, so people could look back and know that this topic of Polio was being covered. Just 2 years later, in 1954 a man named Francis started a trial on the vaccine, that is put into the body by a needle. Francis couldn't find anything wrong with it, so on Tuesday, April 12th, 1955 the vaccine was released for doctors to give out to the public. Jonas' next big event in his life would be hard to get over, on Thursday, November 26th, 1959 somewhere in New York, Daniel Salk dies. Jonas' dad Daniel died at the age of 69. This is a very early age to die to us, yet still an early death back then. Although his father had just passed, Jonas refused to give up on his studies. In 1963, Jonas decided to become the director of the Salk Institute, which was known as the Institute for Biological Studies first. This new job was located in La Jolla, California. After this job transition he face the hard truth that on Sunday, September 27th, 1964, somewhere in New York, likely near where her husband died, Jonas' mother dies. His mother Dora Salk dies at the age of 75. Which is young to us, and sort-of old back then. After both of his parents deaths, he was even more determined to finish his studies, and learn even more. Somewhere in 1968, Jonas divorces Donna Salk. In only two years, he is ready to get married again on Monday, June 29th, 1970 to Françoise Salk. Françoise Salk, has three children named Claude (the oldest), Paloma (the second oldest and the middle child), and Aurelia (the youngest), and Jonas has three sons named Peter (the oldest), Darrell (the second oldest and the middle child), and then Jonathan (the youngest). Later, sometime in 1977, Jonas won an award called the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Sadly, he only lived for another 18 years. On Friday, June 23rd, 1995 Jonas dies in San Diego, California.
