Why do you believe that the Americans were successful in winning their independence from the British in the 1780s? Explain reasons why the British lost and the Americans won the war.

The American's had a cause to rally behind for the war. They were familiar with the land and were organized by the early 1780s. George Washington's leadership kept the soldiers together and won a few major battles. Although the Continental Army lost many early battles, they consistently had fewer casualties than the British. This wore down the British army who was already in debt from the Seven Years War. Bitterness from the last war also put Spain and France on the U.S. side. Aid from outside countries left British with a war too costly to win.
