The agency in charge of the naturalization process in the United States is the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). To become a U.S. citizen, one has to pass the naturalization test. This test consists of two tests: The English test and Civics test.  

The English test determines whether the applicant can speak and understand English. This is determined by the person’s ability to read, write, speak and understand English. The applicant must be able to communicate through simple vocabulary and grammar. To pass the speaking test, the applicant must meaningfully answer to the questions that are relevant to his or her naturalization eligibility. For the Reading section the applicant must read out loud one sentence in a way that the meaning does not get lost with long pauses. For the writing test the applicant must write a sentence out of three which are dictated by the officer.  

Finally, for the Civics test the applicant must have knowledge of U.S. history and government principles. The Civics test consists of ten questions and to successfully pass the test, six questions must be answered correctly.
