The challenges that Italy faced after Unification were countless. Cultural and political differences between people of Italy affected the growth of the country. That made the process of Unification arduous one. It was the domination and authority of ‘The Church’ which it had before and after the Unification that came as biggest challenge in front of Italian government. The Pope always had a strong hold on catholic people and for them Unification meant creation of government which shares equal powers and this was the issue between church and government as from centuries church used to do unification of the people through ‘Faith’. The Church was called the only opponent of the government after Unification took place as a driving doctrine of the church was, ‘Free Church in a Free State’.  State government wanted to make relations with Pope but they had to compromise on many things for two decades as they saw lack of willingness from Church to discuss on this issue. The issue between Church and state only declined after 1929 when Church finally recognized the Legitimacy of a State. The international support which the Church and Pope got was the reason that the State wasn’t even able to use army in this case.
