Why was it difficult to keep the native Americans at the missions

I have photographic memory and memorized this from www.history.com, and I hope it is helpful. "The California missions began in the late 18th century as an effort to convert Native Americans to Catholicism and expand European territory. Spain was responsible for the missions, which scholars believe were attempts to colonize the Pacific coast of North America." So in other words, Native Americans did not want to be transformed to Catholic. Tribes begrudged the missions on hunting grounds.
