Where did the US Founding Fathers get the idea for the electoral college?

At the time, there were no other countries that elected their own top leader.  So the electoral college was a compromise developed at the Philadelphia Convention.  The  compromise was mostly developed to make sure the slave owning states would ratify the constitution.
