Is it important for the supreme court to be able to strike down laws as unconstitutional?

Yes It is.

The reason behind this is because, the founding fathers knew, one day in our nation, that a law may be passed, and it may not follow our constitution. Therefore the made a court that can strike down laws. And this is why they try and make the court NON-POLITICAL, but that doesn't happen most of the time.
