In the late nineteenth century, why was it more common for western than for eastern states and territories to grant women the right to vote?

Western states appreciated the active role women took in the Civil War and rewarded their actions by granting

them suffrage.

Fewer women lived in the trans-Mississippi region, so men in these states and territories believed their votes

would have minimal impact on elections.

Western states did not have the sharp division between Catholics and Protestants that hindered the suffrage

movement in the East.

Women's suffrage leaders Carrie Chapman Catt and Alice Paul were natives of the West and eloquently

persuaded their home states to grant women the right to vote.
