Well the US never really lived up to its ideals fully. Even today there is a lot of inequality that is deliberately there and many fights to preserve them, but that is a very long subject so I will stick to world war 2.

During the war, many Japanese-Americans were put into camps just because of their race. Black and white soldiers were still not treated equally. And they didn't care about how democratic their enemies were. They were practicing many things that Germany and Japan were for the last 100 years.
