Analyze this paragraph from an article on the history of writing. The people who knew how to write in ancient civilizations were called scribes, and they were held in high esteem within their societies. Scribes kept records of the day-to-day life of a kingdom or empire, including lists of crops, goods available for trade, and taxes collected for the king. Some scribes also wrote letters for other people, setting up shop right in the marketplaces. Other scribes wrote the words in temples and on amulets that were supposed to keep people safe from the wrath of the gods. Still others studied the stars and planets, or described out how to best to build a temple or dig a well. From their very beginnings, civilizations recognized the power of the written word and rewarded those who did the writing. What is the purpose of this paragraph?
