The First Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry Regiment prevented the advance of the Texas army with their sharpshooting. The Confederates had faulty gunpowder from Mexico, while the Union had more cannons and better artillery. This battle was significant because the Confederates lost control of the Indian Territory north of the Arkansas River and the Union gained an easy route to Fort Smith.
