Often, these treaty agreements centered on lines of longitude or latitude. Finally, the United States gained land because of war. After the Mexican-American War, Mexico agreed to give the Mexican Cession to the United States in exchange for a small payment. Mexico also recognized America’s right to annex lands in Texas officially.
