North was rallied in support of the Tallmadge proposal.While acceptable to many Northern Democrats,that angered the South and led to the division of the last remaining national political institution, the Democratic Party. Southerners believed that Abraham Lincoln was an abolitionist and also felt betrayed by Stephen Douglas's suggestion that territories could refuse to grant slavery legal protection.
