Between 1642 and 1646 Britain engaged in a Civil War propelled by the Monarch, Charles I and those who opposed his policies.

As a Monarch he believed that he had absolute power divinely ordained to rule his people with or without their cooperation.  The resulting recklessness progressively developed into a civil war.  As he decided to strangle Parliament (which represented, he was rewarded with more opposition.  This act also strengthened Parliament to introduce measures against the King.
