Water is extremely important for civilizations, and for ancient civilizations, even more so.

This can be seen in history very easily: there are four civilizations that are recognized by historians as the most ancient: the Egyptian civilization, the Sumerian (Mesopotamian) civilization, the Indian civilization, and the Chinese civilization.

All four civilizations had one thing in common: they were developed around a large river, which served for communication, transportation, and agricultural purposes.

The Egyptian civilization developed along the Nile, the Sumerian civilization developed along the Tigris and Euphrates, the Indian civilization developed along the Indus river (this is why it is also called the Indus valley civilization), and the Chinese civilization developed around the Yellow River, or as it is known in Chinese, the "Yangtze" River.

These rivers were important because they allowed communication and transportation of goods between cities and villages, and also, because they were a water source used in agriculture.
