If the Allies lost the war then they probably weren’t going to get their money back. In January 1917, Germany sent the Zimmerman telegram to the German diplomatic representative in Mexico. The telegram was intercepted by the British, and after it was decrypted it was sent to the United States. The combination of all of these thing caused the United States to join the war.
