Have you ever sat in your history class and thought to yourself, “this is SO boring”? Either way, I’m here to tell you about balancing power in the constitution, without you getting bored out of your mind. This is actually one of my personal favorite subjects, when it comes to history. I will discuss checks and balances, federalists, and anti-federalists. Let’s get right into it! First subject matter is… checks and balances! Checks and balances are basically the rights and responsibilities given to each branch of the government: executive, legislative, and judicial. These rights and responsibilities make sure that one branch of government doesn’t become too powerful and take over. Imagine this: Congress makes a bill and sends it to the president. The president can sign the bill and make it into a law, or he/she can veto it. If the president veto’s the bill, and the congress doesn’t agree with the bill. The congress can not return the bill to the congress. Those who favored ratification were known as Federalists,while those who opposed it were considered Anti- Federalists. ... The Federalists defended the weakest point of the Constitution—a lack of a Bill of Rights—by suggesting that current protections were sufficient and that the Congress could always propose Amendments. The Anti-Federalists opposed the ratification of the 1787 U.S. Constitution because they feared that the new national government would be too powerful and thus threaten individual liberties, given the absence of a bill of rights.
