Charyybdis was beautiful at one time but had been changed by Zeus into a monster. She was a "huge bladder of a creature whose face was all mouth and whose arms and legs were flippers." Scylla is a six headed spider with twelve legs. She had a hunger for human flesh. Charybdis enraged Zeus by winning land for her father and he changed her into a monster. Poseidon fell in love with Scylla and provoked jealously in his wife who changed Scylla into a spider.
