How did news of the Watergate break-in affect Nixon’s 1972 re-election bid?

The Watergate scandal began in early 1972 when five burglars were arrested in the office of Democratic National Committee. It was located in the Watergate complex buildings in Washington.  The burglars were wiretapping phones and stealing documents. After the matter came to lime light, Richard Nixon tried to cover it up. His role in the covering up was revealed in August 1974. Nixon resigned after the revelation of the scandal.  Although the Watergate break- in didn't affect his re-election bid for presidency.
