The Partition of India refers to the division of the former British India due to religious and ethnic conflicts that ultimately led to the establishment of two independent states between August 14 and 15, 1947: Pakistan and India. Until 1971, Pakistan consisted of two parts: West Pakistan (today's Pakistan) and East Pakistan (today's Bangladesh).
