Read this excerpt from “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.”

In 1835, after seven years of mistreatment, she escaped. Because she did not know a safe way to get to freedom in the North, she had to go into hiding. At first, she stayed at the house of a white Southern woman who wanted to help her. When she was close to being discovered, she fled and hid in the underground cellar of relatives. She lived in the underground space for seven years before she could run away to freedom.

The excerpt describes Harriet Jacob’s life on the run and mostly helps readers visualize
