Nurses emerged during the Civil War as volunteers eventually becoming organized programs.

Women would come to the battlefields near their home to care for the wounded soldiers. Clara Barton was the most famous Civil War nurse. She worked to organize nurses and create a system for nurses to care for the soldiers. Barton would later go on to organize the Red Cross bringing together people to care for people during emergency situations.
