The poorest farmers do not have adequate farm equipment nor money nor enough fertilizer; their crops are meager, and, with very little money left after paying rent to the landowner, they must also sell their labor in order to make ends meet. In difficult times they must even beg assistance from friends and relatives. . . . Meanwhile, their debts pile up like loads on the backs of cattle. These, the poorest among the peasants, are highly amenable [very willing to agree with] to the propaganda of the revolution. —Mao Zedong, Analysis of the Classes in Chinese Society According to this quotation, why are poor farmers good targets for Communist propaganda? The receive plenty of communal help from relatives and friends to pay debts. They are not well-educated, so they are easy to persuade with propaganda. They lead very hard lives, so convincing them to revolt is easy. They have not encountered Communists before, and the revolutionary message is new.
