As immigrants move to the United States, the population of the country changes. Data about population trends such as age, ethnicity, and location are called demographics. White Americans now make up a smaller portion of the total U. S. population. Some states, such as California and New Mexico, developed “majority minority” populations by 2010. This means that minority residents outnumbered white residents. In 2012, 49.9 percent of all Americans aged five or younger belonged to minority groups. These facts suggest that the United States may become a “majority minority” nation by 2043.

The change in demographics affects many parts of the country. Today, Americans can find food and customs from all over the world on a single main street. The change also has affected politics. In the 2012 presidential election, President Barack Obama received many minority votes. He got the votes of 93 percent of all African Americans, 71 percent of Hispanics, and 73 percent of Asians. His Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, attracted 59 percent of white voters. As the population changes, minority groups will play major roles in choosing leaders.
