Why did the Europeans do these horrible things to the people of the Congo?

I'm not sure about Congo but for St. Domingue, or modern day Haiti, It was for resources. The slaves imported from Africa were used in sugar cane and coffee plantations and Haiti was once the richest of all the colonies.
