Why did Nixon decide it was in the nation's best interests to improve relations with China?

The rapprochment with China decided by president Richard Nixon in 1971-1972 had several motives related to foreign and domestic policy. In the first place, Nixon hoped to get China´s cooperation to end the Vietnam War; China played an important logistical role for the Northern Vietnamese fighting the American troops. Secondly, improving these relations with China could also helped him win his reelection in 1972 by scoring an important foreign policy success. And thirdly, getting closer to Beijing would give the United States another useful card in his geopolitical rivalry with the Soviet Union, as the two communist states had become enemies in the 1960s.
