There were two main movements in the country, one being the nationalist which was striding toward capitalism and the other one as the communist which was striding toward command economy. In many ways the two sides represented the East and the West just in local terms.

This resulted in a military conflict between the two which ended with division of the country into two separate countries, North Korea and South Korea.
