Describe the background and significance of plessy v. Ferguson

Plessy v. Ferguson started out because of an incident where an African American refused to sit in a car for blacks.  African-Americans wanted to be treated equally, so they went to the Supreme Court in 1896, and the Supreme Court upheld with "separate but equal".
