General Ebenezer Pierce sent troops to a frontal attack along the road, but was repelled. The 5th New York Regiment (Zouaves) crossed the river downstream and tried to bypass the left flank of the Confederates, but was also repelled. Federal units randomly retreated to Hampton and Newport News.
