In setting up the hideout, Otto Frank had the help of the four employees he trusted most: Victor Kugler, Johannes Kleiman, Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl. They plus Johannes' father and Miep's husband were the only ones who knew about the hideout.
These people kept the Franks informed with news of the war and the Nazis' persecution of Jews. They also helped them by bringing food they bought on the "black market", a task that has become increasingly difficult and risky over time. Non-Jewish citizens who helped Jews hide were in danger of being executed immediately by the Nazis if they were discovered.
Anne spent most of her time writing her diary or studying. Every day, right after lunch, she did math, languages, history and other subjects.
On the morning of August 4, 1944, the Nazi police raided the hideout, whose location was discovered by an informant who was never identified. All refugees were placed in trucks and taken for questioning. Victor Kugler and Johannes Kleiman were also arrested, unlike Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl, who were released.
The latter returned to the hiding place where they found Anne's papers scattered on the floor and several albums with photographs of the family. They collected this material and kept it in the hope of returning it to Anne after the war was over.
