Why didn’t the portuguese have access to the territory that is present day latin and north america

The Portuguese did not have access to much of Latin and North America because they were limited by the Treaty of Tordesillas.

The Treaty of Tordesillas:

The treaty effectively limited Portugal to Brazil and allowed Spain to take over other parts of Latin America and North America. As the British and the French were not party to the treaty, they simply took land in North America.

In conclusion, the Portuguese did not have access to much of Latin America and North America because of the Treaty of Tordesillas.

Portuguese started conquering Latin America from the moment of discovery of Brazil (firt original name was Terra de Vera Cruz) which took place in 1500 (Pedro Álvarez Cabral). Their conquest of the Brazilian inland continued especially during the second half of the 16th century. Few years before this "discovery" (some historians today speak of "invasion"), in 1494, pope ratified "Tordesillas Treaty" (Tordesillas is a small Spanish village) were future territories of Spain and Portugal were specified and delimited. In General, Portuguese did pay much more attention to its African or Asian territories.

Today´s Brazil is much bigger than it was depicted in the treaty.  However Portugues conquerors were able to conquer a big part of non-montaneous south-American inland. Brazil´s territory was finally defined and delimited in the end of 19th century (Rio Branco).
