The occupation of Wounded Knee was an occupation organized by a group of Indian activists, involved the capture of the settlement of Wounded Knee in the state of South Dakota, where in 1890 a huge massacre of Native Americans at hands of US troops took place.

A group of about 200 people wanted to point out the poor living conditions at the nearby Oglal Reserve in Pine Ridge and breaking the treaties between the tribe and the US government. Protesters also opposed violence against the Indians as well as racism of the authorities and society. The Indians seized the settlement on February 27, 1973, proclaimed independence, and took 11 hostages. Among the Indians were the inhabitants of the Pine Ridge Reserve and members of the American Indian Movement, armed mainly with small arms.

AIM demanded the establishment of a Senate commission to plunder the lands of the Oglal tribe, and to replace the Tribal Council by an independent government. The occupation lasted 71 days and ended on May 8 surrendering under the pressure of tribal chiefs. During the occupation, two Indians were killed, one FBI agent was seriously injured, and about 300 protesters were arrested.
