Eli Whitney was the inventor of the cotton gin. While it was true that it reduced the labor of removing seeds, it did not reduce the need for slaves to grow and pick the cotton. Actually, it increased the amount of slaves and want for land. By 1860, there was an estimate of 4 million slaves.
