The Mountain was a political club that existed during the French Revolution, between 1792 and 1797. Led by renowned revolutionary leaders such as Maximilien Robespierre and Georges Danton, the Mountain was considered the most radical political group in the National Assembly. They mainly oppposed the Girondins, who had a generally more moderate position, and they clashed once more over the fate of Louis XVI. The deposed French king was arrested on August 1792, and later on September 21st, the monarchy was abolished and the first French Republic was proclaimed. While the Girondins were generally content with keeping the King as a merely ceremonial figure, the Mountain opposed this, and they sought to put the King on trial, as this was seen as a definitive break with the ancién regime. The Girondins were unable to resist them, and Louis XVI was tried, declared guilty of high treason, and guillotined on 21 January, 1793.
