What is zakat and why do muslims practice it?

Zakat is one of the pillars of Islam. It is understood as the obligatory giving of a set percentage of a believer´s wealth to charity works or actions. It doesn´t refer to personal gifts out of kindness, but to a systematic giving of somebody´s 2.5% of their wealth to the poor. Zakat is the third pillar of Islam.
